If she can do it...............

I just read the BEST book!!!!!! A PIECE OF CAKE by CUPCAKE BROWN

This is an awesome book of survival. This is the memoir of a woman who OVERCAME horrible things!!!!!

She was thrust into the foster care system after her momma died when she was 11. Her sperm donor sent her away to the foster momma from hell. This sent her into a never ending cycle of running away, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, prostitution, gang activityand theft. You name it she did it................

It was not just her hellacious youth that touched me it was her DRIVE!!!! After leaving rehab she decided to try school. Not only did she graduate community college and San Diego state.........she went on to LAW SCHOOL!!!! You hear me?????? Law school!!!!!!!

I was in tears!!! I read the book in record is AWESOME!!!!!!! I was a little skeptical to read a memoir after the "million little pieces" OPRAH fiasco but i'm glad I picked this book up!!!!! check out her story at

If she can do it...............WHAT THE HELL IS MY EXCUSE??????? WHAT AM I WAITING FOR?????

yep...... my oldest was sooooo excited when he got in from school yesterday!!!!!! He was going against 50 seniors and he has made it 2 the top 5!!!!! he came home with his little crown on yesterday...............grinning from ear 2 ear...........

"mom someone nominated me for prom king"

who son???

"I don't know probably some females"

that's cool..........

"they nominated me on Monday but I didn't think anything of it cause there were 49 more popular boys nominated 2!!!" Then they came 2 my home room today with this little crown saying I made the final 5"

that's awesome son!!!!

"I guess i'm more popular than i thought"

I guess so baby!!!!

"I hate I have 2 run against my homeboy Shane though"

oh yeah that sucks...................

"oh well it's a's on!!!!! I've been walking around all day shaking hands saying vote for James Monte vista sr. high prom king 06!!!!!!!

my baby prom's soooo cute 2 see him so excited!!!!!!!!

I will keep you posted!!!!!! Have a great day!!!!!!!!

First off:

I didn't read that book, but I did read an excerpt of it in some book I was reading at the hair salon, and I found it intriguing. Not more so of her profession, but that she was able to break the cycle of what was going on in her life to make a change, and create possibilities for her life.

There are no excuses. There are obstacles, yes, but no excuses.

And as for your son, guurrl! Prom King, now that what I'm talking bout!

I'm so glad you enjoyed Cupcake Brown's memoir.

As a former foster child, child advocate and writer, I was so upset by the actions of the author of "A Million Little Pieces."

His duplicity damaged public perception of the credibility of memoirs.

I love memoirs. I read them by the dozen! I believe that in just about everyone's life, we each accumulate insghts and wisdom.

That's why I'm writing one about my experiences in foster care:

If you ever want to share your opinions on the foster care system (which I am working to change), please visit my blog:

I plan to read that book. Overcoming her life situation should be a story told to many of our children and teens who think their lives are hopeless. Thanks for sharing.
